News From The Market

PLEASE HELP OUR SMALL FARMS: 2 VITAL ISSUES

October 2024: The USDA’s mandate for electronic cattle will go into effect in less than a month if we don’t take action now! This would force small farmers to adopt expensive technology, benefiting large corporations while harming local, sustainable farmers.

HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THE FIRST ONE

  1. Contact Your U.S. Representative: Urge them to oppose this overreach and cosponsor H.J. Res. 167 to stop it. Visit the Action Center for a sample script and contact information.
  2. Contact Both Your U.S. Senators. Urge them to cosponsor S.J. Res. 98.

HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THE SECOND ONE

The LOCAL Foods Act of 2024 will help small farmers to slaughter their cows on-farm instead of having to drive long hours and pay high fees for inspected processors. TX representative Colin Allred is running for Senate so he should be interested in hearing from people all over the state.

PLEASE STAND UP FOR OUR SMALL FARMS!

Call Representative Colin Alred’s office today at (202) 225-2231 and ask him to support a House version of the LOCAL Foods Act of 2024.

Sample message you can use:

“Hi, my name is [Your Name] and I’m a [farmer/rancher/local food advocate] from [Your Town], Texas. Please ask Rep. Colin Allred to sponsor and support House version of S. 5106, the LOCAL Foods Act, which is vital for small farmers and ranchers by reducing highly expensive processing fees, thus reducing costs to consumer and protecting farmers’ rights to practice on-farm slaughter ACCORDING TO STATE LAW. Please encourage Rep. Allred to support this critical legislation. Thank you.”

And since the Senate race in Texas is getting a lot of national attention, it means we have the potential to make on-farm slaughter personal-exemption reform (the LOCAL Foods Act) a national issue!

The Farm & Ranch Freedom Alliance is celebrating 16 years and you can help their mission: to serve as the voice for all independent family farmers.
